The TPA6138A2 is a crackle-free stereo headphone amplifier designed to allow the elimination of output DC blocking capacitors to reduce component count and cost. The device is ideal for single-supply electronics where size and cost are key design parameters. The TPA6138A2 is designed using TI's patented DirectPath™ technology to deliver 25mW of drive power into a 32Ω load from a 3.3V supply voltage. The device has differential inputs and uses external gain setting resistors to support a gain range of ±1 V/V to ±10 V/V. Gain can be configured individually for each channel. Alternatively, the device can also be configured as a second-order low-pass filter, making it ideal for interfacing with PWM sources. The audio outputs meet ±8kV IEC ESD protection specifications, requiring only a simple resistor-capacitor ESD protection circuit. The TPA6138A2 has a built-in active mute control function circuit for crackle-free audio on/off control. The TPA6138A2 has an external brown-out detector that mutes the output when power is removed, ensuring crackle-free shutdown operation. Using the TPA6138A2 in audio products can significantly reduce component count compared to traditional headphone amplifiers. The TPA6138A2 requires no split-rail power supply or DC blocking capacitors. The TPA6138A2 integrates its own charge pump to generate a negative supply rail that provides a clean, crack-free ground-biased audio signal. The TPA6138A2 is available in a 14-pin TSSOP package.
